FreQ Nasty Bio;
Aka Darin McFayden, raised in New Zealand after moving from Fiji, FreQ now splits his time between LA and London. He started his career on the seminal UK label Botchit & Scarper in the late nineties, moving to SKINT Records in 2003. He has gone on to release a slew of cutting-edge records collaborating and remixing a diverse range of artists including Fatboy Slim, Bassnectar, Kelis, KRS One, Roots Manuva, Rodney P and Reggae legend Junior Delgado. In the past year his track collaboration called ‘Creator’ with MIA Producer Switch and NYC hipster Santogold has been an unavoidable crossover hit worldwide. His ground breaking 'FABRICLIVE 42 Mix' CD (rumbling underground thunder in a staggering showcase of the rawest bass led beats around) is out now on London superclub Fabric’s own imprint, and he has a new artist album in the pipeline for 2009.

Darin started off as a musician playing drums and bass in backyard band type set ups with his friends and with the sampler. The interbreeding of drum techniques from Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Garage, House and the bottom end of Jungle basslines started to form this underground sound that people to this day are still trying to define into genres.

His tunes remain ahead of the pack. His music helps define the future movement, a chaotic loose assemblage of sonic renegades, steeped in the traditions of Breaks, Dubstep, Rock, Trip Hop, Ragga, Grime and Funk, chopping in and out of slowmotion, halfstep beats. FreQ is always creating new sounds, referencing Breaks in the spirit that spawned the genre…twisting whatever is on hand to create something fresh for the ears, full fat for the feet, and free on the mind!

Nasty, the breakbeat innovator established himself as one of the UK dance music scene’s pioneers early on by producing many of breakbeat’s most defining moments. Not fully content with rehashing his genre-defining debut album 'FreQ’s Geeks & Mutilations' (1999), he dropped his 'Bring Me The Head Of FreQ Nasty’ album in 2003 for SKINT records, creating the template for the ‘Ragga Breaks’ movement and simultaneously kicking off the breakbeat garage scene with signature tracks ‘Goose’ and ‘Amped’ effortlessly traversing genres, earning big praise from breakbeat, garage, house and techno djs internationally. 2004 and 05 saw FreQ touring the world with his ‘Video Nasty Experience’ Live Show, an eye-melting DJ/VJ fusion of animation, graphics and live Vjing perpetrated by a hit squad of crack artists including fellow New Zealanders ‘Brother’s Mogg’ (Lord of the Rings/King Kong Animators), and ‘Gorrillaz’ artist Jamie Hewlett’s company Zombie Flesh Eaters.

In 2006 he connected with music oriented techies from Yahoo and Shopzilla and a cell of underground code junkies out of San Fran and spent a good portion of his down time creating Giveback.net, a website dedicated to enabling artists to use their musical clout to help make the world a better place. It launched in early 08 and he has since donated music (with US artist Bassnectar) for several campaigns supporting freedom for the Tibetan people, an irrigation system for a village in Ethiopia (with Damien Marley), and a music studio for kids in an economically deprived area of San Francisco (with Michael Franti).

Since those days things have rocketed for Nasty. He toured around the world dropping huge bassline beats into speakers from France, Poland, Zurich, Finland, Holland, Singapore, Slovenia to New York, Miami and Canada all over. He also toured NZ & Australia extensively over the years and played almost every major global festival you can imagine.
