A-Train Description THE VAGABOND and BACK DOOR BAMBY Present AIN’T NOTHING BUT A HOUSE PARTY starring JELLYBEAN BENITEZ Since dance music’s humble beginnings in the nightclubs of New York City, the DJ has come a long way from anonymous figure high up in the DJ booth to a superstar basking in fame’s spotlight. While many a DJ have climbed stardom’s ladder, John “Jellybean” Benitez can boast of casting many of the rungs himself. Benitez began as a DJ in the burgeoning New York City disco scene, spinning at such influential clubs as Studio 54 and Electric Circus. Even at a club as revered as Studio 54, the DJs responsible for the soundtrack of countless evenings were shrouded in relative obscurity. At one point this was true of Jellybean, but not for long. Benitez soon graduated from playing hit records to making them. He quickly went from being a DJ/producer to the DJ/producer, producing and remixing tracks for countless artists as disparate as they are influential. He’s called the shots in the studio for such artists as Barbra Streisand, Huey Louis, Michael Jackson, Hall & Oates, and Paul McCartney. He became such a prolific and revered producer that oftentimes album covers display his name more prominently than that of the artist. As if his laundry list of international hits isn’t enough, he is largely credited with orchestrating Madonna’s meteoric rise to fame. He featured the little known singer on his 1984 hit “Sidewalk Talk,” a track that not only put Madonna on the map, but gained him the distinction of being the first DJ to become a Top 40 pop artist. He is also behind some of Madonna’s biggest hits, including “Holiday” and her number one single “Crazy for You.” After enjoying so much success in the recording studio, Benitez has yet to abandon the DJ booth.
